Check out this list of petitions that still need signing. If you do nothing else today, commit to signing at least 5 of these petitions. It takes approximately 37 seconds to sign a petition (I timed it).
Please note that while it's important to sign these petitions and show support, I've come across various resources that express skepticism about change.org's practices. Change.org is a for-profit organization, so they profit off petitions signed. Read more here and please reach out with any thoughts/leads about this!
Donate:
It's Pride Month! If you have the means, please consider donating to the organizations shared below. They are organizations committed to supporting Black trans folks, a community that is SO CENTRAL in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights! (I will devote weekend newsletter to this). Each organization listed below focuses on a different area of support, so if you can donate to all that is a great way to support Black trans folks more holistically!
Housing: G.L.I.T.S. is an amazing organization that works to support and advocate for health and rights crises "faced by transgender sex workers holistically using harm reduction, human rights principles, economic and social justice." They arecurrently focused on using funds for housing, "since so many in our G.L.I.T.S.’ community are without stable housing, deepening the cycle of disenfranchisement." You can donate to G.L.I.T.S. any or all of the following ways:
Nourishment:The Okra Project "is acollective that seeks to address the global crisis faced by Black Trans people by bringing home cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources to Black Trans People wherever we can reach them. Based on individual donations, The Okra Project pays Black Trans chefs to go into the homes of Black Trans people to cook them a healthy and home-cooked meal atabsolutely no cost to our Black TGNC siblings. For those Black Trans folks currently experiencing homeless or whose homes cannot support our chef’s cooking, The Okra Project has partnered with institutions like Osborne Association and other community spaces to deliver foods."Donate through PayPal here.
COVID-19 Testing:Brave Space Alliance"is the first Black-led, trans-led LGBTQ Center located on the South Side of Chicago, dedicated to creating and providing affirming, culturally competent, for-us by-us resources, programming, and services for LGBTQ individuals on the South and West sides of the city."
Right now, Brave Space is specifically focused on COVID-19 testing and relief. You can learn more and donatehere.
Art:Black Trans Femmes In the Arts works to "connect the community of Black trans women and non-binary femmes in the arts and to build power among ourselves." You can donate directlyhere.
On-Going Resource Bank:
- The Cadence Project, organized by Jodi Taylor and L Cardenas, is a resource-sharing jackpot. It details petitions to sign, black business to support, places to donate and more.
-Justice in June, organized by Bryanna Wallace and Autumn Gupta, provides daily actionable and educational ways to support the Black community and "combat racial injustice and oppression." Resources are organized by your desired time commitment - 10 minutes, 25 minutes or 45 minutes a day.
